Report: Liverpool now hope to beat Everton to ‘top’ Championship midfielder

Liverpool now hope to beat Everton to George Hall, according to reports. The Birmingham City midfielder has his suitors.

This comes from the Daily Mail. They claim that both Liverpool and Everton have joined the race to sign George Hall from Birmingham City.

Hall is one of the latest stars to come out of Birmingham’s academy and the 18-year-old is making great impressions in the Championship right now. Still only 18, he’s made five starts this season, with another 13 appearances coming from the bench.

There are, inevitably, comparisons to Jude Bellingham. The England star also came through Birmingham before leaving for Borussia Dortmund – though, you can make that comparison with several of their players, most notably Jude’s brother Jobe.

But Hall built enough of a reputation in 2022 that Leeds United already tried to sign him in the summer. They found the price was too high then, though the Mail believe they’ll now come back in for the player.

With both Liverpool and Everton sniffing around, however, that price is only going to rise.

Birmingham boss John Eustace doesn’t particularly want to part with Hall. He talked to the BBC just this week about the player, labelling him a ‘top young player’ who is developing very well.

“For me, George Hall is one of the top young players in the league,” said Eustace. “He’s a very effective player whether he starts or we have him coming off the bench.

“He’s only just turned 18 – and he’s got an opportunity to showcase himself here. We don’t want George Hall going anywhere.”

It seems that if Liverpool do want to add Hall to their growing collection of elite youngsters, they’ll face a fight. Exactly how much they’re wiling to pay to win that fight isn’t clear – but they’ve been willing to go all-out for youngsters in the past.

Hall could well be the latest, then, following Harvey Elliott, Bobby Clark and Fabio Carvalho as high-profile youngsters that the Reds took a chance on.
