Chelsea will sign Liverpool target David Datro Fofana, says Fabrizio Romano. The Blues may be getting a bargain.

This comes from Fabrizio Romano. He took to Twitter on Thursday to report that Chelsea are close to signing David Datro Fofana.

The Ivorian has lit up the Norwegian league for Molde, earning links to various other sides. Ivorian outlet Fratmat claimed earlier this season that Liverpool wanted Fofana. In November, Romano mentioned that Brighton led the way for the teenager.

But now it seems Chelsea will sign the 19-year-old after swooping in.

“Exclusive: Chelsea are on the verge of signing David Datro Fofana, here we go soon!” said Romano on Twitter. “There’s full agreement in place with Molde to sign Ivorian striker born in 2002.

“Personal terms are still being discussed with player — then deal will be signed for more than €10m fee.”

Chelsea to sign David Datro Fofana

It always felt unlikely that Liverpool got Fofana. There’s just not much room for him in the squad – certainly on in January. He’s a talented young striker by all accounts, just not one that the Reds need.

He’d have come in as a Divock Origi replacement, really. An out-and-out striker who can lead the line and push defences back but not necessarily play every week. At the same time, he’d have been a long-term investment who could become a top player.

For £10m, we’d have liked that. We just don’t think he’d have received the necessary minutes to develop properly. Certainly not if he just took on what Origi got.

Fofana will be an interesting one to watch, though. He could hit the ground running at a club like Chelsea, who do lack a serious striking option. The Ivorian could make their starting XI in no time, whereas we’re not sure he ever would have done at Anfield.
