Ibrahima Konaté couldn’t celebrate as France made the World Cup final last night. Liverpool’s centre-back was gutted.
Ibrahima Konaté played a significant role on Wednesday as France made it to a second consecutive World Cup final. The Liverpool star started at centre-back and thrived – earning some rave reviews.
And yet, Konaté wasn’t able to celebrate the win. Both he and Joules Koundé were stuck doing doping tests after the final whistle while their teammates celebrated history.
Konaté showed that in an Instagram story – and he wasn’t exactly happy. This was the biggest win of his life, after all, surpassing the Champions League final with Liverpool last season.
Instead of basking in that glory, though, he was stuck with doctors.
Ibrahima Konaté into the World Cup final
That’s got to be gutting – it’s a feat Konaté may never accomplish again, after all. It’s incredibly rare to make one World Cup final but he wasn’t able to celebrate that fact.
Still, we imagine he’ll get over it quickly. There could be an even bigger win coming on Sunday as France take on Argentina in the World Cup final.
Victory would make them only the third country to ever retain the trophy after Italy and Brazil. It hasn’t happened since 1962, however, and France are trying to do something quite incredible here. Lionel Messi stands in their way, of course.

For Konaté, though, it feels like he’s already made his point. After a slow start to the season where he battled injury, the 23-year-old has shone on the biggest stage. Liverpool fans all know just how good he is – one of the best in the country – but there’s now a sense that Konaté is one of the best in the world.
Performing so well as his country makes the Champions League final certainly suggests that. Liverpool have a remarkable player here and one who could help make history this weekend.
