'Got a goal in him': Phil Thompson believes one young Liverpool player will be 'an absolute star'

Phil Thompson believes Fabio Carvalho will be ‘an absolute star’ in the making for Liverpool. The youngster scored on Sunday.

Fabio Carvalho started for Liverpool on Sunday as Liverpool lost 3-1 to Lyon in Dubai. Carvalho got the Reds’ goal, too, as he tapped home inside 45 seconds.

It was put on a plate for him, to be fair, but it’s still a sign that the 20-year-old is feeling a little sharp right now. It bodes well for what could be an important period for him.

After all, Liverpool won’t have Luis Díaz for some time now. Diogo Jota is out, too, meaning Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Darwin Nunez will be the only out-and-out forward options for the next few months.

It’s an opportunity for Carvalho to get some serious minutes in the advanced positions. And it’s an opportunity that Phil Thompson expects him to take.

“I think he’s going to be an absolute star,” Thompson told LFCTV. “It’s where you play him, and when you play him in certain games [that’s the question].

“So does he get the opportunity with Luis Díaz [injured]? Does he start in that position? Does [Darwin] Nunez, who seems to have made that position his own? Or does he start as one of three in midfield, maybe alongside Fabinho?

“What he does, I think he’s creative, he’s got a goal in him – all those things that stand him in good stead. I think he’s going to be a star for the club.”

This isn’t the first time that Thompson has raved about Carvalho. He said some incredible things about him in the summer, too, and it’s clear that the former Liverpool captain sees something special.

That’s high praise. Thompson has seen an incredible number of world-class players come through Liverpool over the years as both a player and a coach.

Despite Carvalho’s stop-start season so far, Thompson still sticks with his prediction. And it’s one that may well come true. The Portuguese playmaker has all the talent he needs to go far with Liverpool.
