Liverpool know Darwin Nunez’s first game back, according to reports. The Uruguayan faced an early exit from the World Cup.
Liverpool didn’t have many players go to the World Cup and it’s meant that unlike other clubs, they haven’t had a flurry of players return as the tournament progresses. In fact, only one player has been knocked out: Darwin Nunez.
Uruguay suffered a heartbreaking exit as they a late South Korea goal elsewhere cost them a knockout-round place. Their points were the same, their goal difference level – the Koreans went through because they’d scored one more goal.
Heartbreak for Nunez is actually a blessing for Liverpool, though. He’ll now get a decent amount of time in their Dubai training camp ahead of club football resuming later this month.
He’ll join up with the squad on Monday, though that rules him out of Sunday’s friendly against Lyon. Per the Liverpool Echo, though, Liverpool do expect Nunez to feature against AC Milan on Friday, December 16th.
Darwin Nunez’s first game back
If a Liverpool player isn’t going to win the tournament, we’d much rather they left the World Cup early. Nunez has done just that – and should see benefits.

After all, some Liverpool players will remain at the tournament for another week at least. That’s going to have an effect over the second half of the season as those players won’t get a mid-season break.
Seasons take a lot of energy as it is, let alone with an intense tournament taking place halfway through. Liverpool are incredibly fortunate that so few players went, in truth. And they’re fortunate that Nunez left early.
So we can’t wait to see what he does next Friday. Having Nunez rested and ready for 2023 would be massive – getting their ‘incredible package’ back early will be a blessing to Jurgen Klopp and co.
