Sofyan Amrabat is the player Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp need in January. The Reds will reportedly hold talks after the World Cup.

French outlet Foot Mercato claims Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool have already met the agents of Sofyan Amrabat. They see a possible January move there, it seems, and will hold further talks after the World Cup.

This comes after Florian Plettenberg suggested teams would have to pay around £25m to get him in winter. Again, the journalist believes Liverpool are a club in the running.

And that’s wonderful news. Amrabat, who is enjoying a great World Cup with Morocco, is exactly the player Liverpool need in January.

Liverpool need Sofyan Amrabat

Amrabat would be a strange signing by Liverpool standards. He’s 26, which is older than the usual incoming players – the only signings above that tend to be world-class, proven stars. Thiago, for instance.

Amrabat isn’t someone who offers a decade of football, nor is he young enough that Liverpool could really mould him. What he is, though, is a player about to enter his prime years who has plenty of experience.

And the Reds need that. There’s a massive gap in their midfield between players coming out of their prime – or simply out of it – and someone like Harvey Elliott who has a long way to go.

Really, only Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are in their ‘prime’ years and we’ve barely seen either this season. Amrabat, then, is the perfect age for a building block in this Liverpool squad. Someone who won’t decline anytime soon but isn’t so young that they’re learning.

He’d also fill another gap in the squad – a tough-tackling midfielder. Liverpool only have one in Fabinho, and he’s also their sold holding midfielder. Amrabat offers another option, while also being able to play a little ahead of the Brazilian or alongside him.

Klopp would have more options with how he builds his side, essentially. A trio of Fabinho, Amrabat and Jordan Henderson could shut down games.

We saw this week, in fact, just how good Amrabat can be as a defensive midfielder. He helped keep out Spain in a historic win – the kind of performance Liverpool may need int he Champions League this season.

We think Liverpool are on the right track here, then. Amrabat would bring what the Reds lack and seriously improve their squad.
