Joe Gomez couldn’t believe what happened during a game of head tennis with Liverpool teammates Mohamed Salah and Thiago Alcantara yesterday.

The Reds are back, finally. After a two-and-a-half week break that has felt like a lifetime, Liverpool training has resumed with a winter camp in Dubai.

With training comes a new instalment of LFCTV’s Inside Training series. And on this particular episode, things got a little heated between Gomez, Thiago, Salah and Joel Matip.

Gomez and Matip faced off against Salah and Thiago as they showed off their close control and heading abilities. A lively match took a controversial turn when Gomez was judged to have made an illegal move.

Things get heated in Dubai

With Salah and Thiago adamant that they should be given a point, the centre-back duo simply cannot believe it.

“You made a step back,” pointed Thiago, as Matip approached the middle of pitch, arms spread wide in disbelief.

“You are superman or what?! He’s superman!” exclaimed the 31-year-old, hands clasped to his head. “No way!” echoed Gomez, as referee Vitor Matos waved away discussions.

With Thiago and Salah seemingly awarded the point, no doubt debate between the quartet continued deep into the night.

Reds missing faces, but preparations ramp up

Of course, the rivalry and competitiveness were all done in the right spirit here. But it’s worth the watch just for Matip’s sheer incredulity.

The only shame is that his mate Virgil van Dijk wasn’t there to make it truly meme worthy. Virg was one of six Reds who were absent due to their exploits at the World Cup.

That will become five very soon, with Darwin Nunez set to join the camp following Uruguay’s elimination last week.

The absent quintet have all made the quarter finals with their country, as the prospect of a Liverpool winner remains. In the meantime, preparations will continue before the Reds face Lyon on Sunday.
