Liverpool are underway in Dubai. The players not at the World Cup will spend the next couple of weeks in warm-weather training – a plan to get everyone at their best level for the second half of the season.
This is an advantage Liverpool have, after all. Remarkably few Reds actually went to the World Cup, meaning their training camp squad is ridiculously strong.
Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Thiago, Luis Díaz, Joel Matip, Harvey Elliott, Roberto Firmino…
Liverpool will, in effect, have a mini-preseason with most of their best players. No other elite club gets that luxury heading into the second half of the season. The Reds must use it wisely.
Liverpool underway with Dubai training camp
Liverpool released the first footage from their training camp on Wednesday. Their ‘Inside Training’ series offers a glimpse into how the squad works – and the latest edition looks good.
It really does have the look and feel of pre-season training. The only difference is how noticeably sharper Liverpool are as they ping the ball around between them.
One rondo, shown at the end of the four-minute video, is played at blistering pace. The tricks and flicks are on show, too, with one shout of ‘Brilliant, Harvey!’ after a particularly nice pass from Elliott.
It’s a sign that this break will be exactly what these players needed. After all, the first half of the season didn’t go to plan and Liverpool looked sluggish. Perhaps that’s to be expected after playing every possible game last season.
So what more can you ask for than a mid-season rest? Well, how about a mid-season rest when your rivals don’t really get one. Or at least, don’t have so many key players enjoying it.
