‘He also called me’: Liverpool 20-year-old has two former Reds giving him advice

Liverpool’s Billy Koumetio has two former Reds giving him advice. The 20-year-old called both ahead of a loan move this summer.

Billy Koumetio left Liverpool’s U21 side this summer to spend a season with Austria Vienna. It hasn’t gone to plan, however, with the 20-year-old playing just twice since September.

That’s not exactly the kind of experience Liverpool will have hoped for when he left for this season. At the end of the day, it would be better not to play on Merseyside than in Vienna. At least that way, the Reds can work with him themselves.

And so there might be some big decisions in the near future. Liverpool won’t want Koumetio sitting out of the side and we can’t imagine the player will, either.

What is clear, though, is that Koutmetio is getting advice from the right places. He explained in an interview with the Liverpool Echo how a couple of former Reds are a phone call away.

“I spoke to Sadio Mane during the holidays,” said Koumetio. “I told him I would go on loan.

“He supported me, saying if I go on loan, any league that I went to, he will support me and watch the games. But I didn’t talk to him about exactly the club or league I would go to.

“I spoke to Divock Origi, who I am close to also. Just before I took the flight, I called him. He also called me before he signed his contract with AC Milan. They are very close to me and are giving me very good advice.”

It’s always great to see the support and camaraderie in the Liverpool squad. There’s no real surprise that it continues beyond just the Kirkby training ground, then.

Both Mané and Origi have made massive decisions in their careers, of course. They each chose to join Liverpool and made tough calls on their future there. Origi chose to stay when he could have secured a starting role elsewhere in 2019. Mané opted to swap for the final big contract of his career.

Such experience will stand Koumetio in good stead.
