PSV Eindhoven attacker and reported Liverpool target Cody Gakpo has sent Virgil van Dijk a message following the Netherlands’ progression to the quarter finals of the World Cup.
The 23-year-old has been a standout player at the tournament, with massive transfer speculation emerging as a result.
Teammates for the Dutch national team, the Reds defender has become accustomed to the winger’s emphatic qualities.
After beating the USA 3-1 in the round of 16, van Dijk took to Instagram to celebrate his side reaching the last eight – in which they will face Argentina.
“Progress. Next up, quarter finals,” the Liverpool centre-back wrote.
Taking to the comments, Gakpo reacted with two emojis: a love heart, followed by a hailing hands emoji.
As per Voetbal International journalist Marco Timmer, PSV are set to demand just £45m to part ways with the youngster – and the Merseyside club are reportedly interested.
Gakpo and van Dijk are shining for Holland
After missing out on the World Cup in 2018, the Dutch are looking to impress out in Qatar.
Having lost in the 2010 final and having finished third in 2014, their absence came as a massive shock in Russia.
However, Louis van Gaal’s side are much better equipped this time around, with van Dijk leading the line as the country’s captain.
With such experience at the back, the Netherlands needed the attack to step-up to the plate, and Gakpo has done exactly that.

The PSV star became the first man in Holland’s history to score in their first three games of a World Cup tournament.
Having already impressed the rest of Europe in the Eredivisie this season, the 23-year-old has now done it on the biggest stage in world football.
At such a young age, the Dutchman is an excellent investment for long-term success. Hailed as ‘incredible’ by commentator Matteo Bonetti, Liverpool should do all they can to reunite van Dijk with Gakpo at Anfield.
