Report: US multi-billionaire now considered ‘unlikely’ to be Liverpool’s new owner as options narrow

Woody Johnson, the multi-billionaire US owner of the New York Jets NFL team, is unlikely to take over from Fenway Sports Group at Liverpool.

That’s according to the Liverpool Echo, who report that despite early links as a potential candidate, the 75-year-old is improbable to becoming the new owner of the Reds.

Johnson was rumoured to be in the race to buy Chelsea, when Roman Abramovich put the west London club up for sale. Having missed out, links with the Merseyside outfit emerged, backed by previous comments made by the New York Jets chief.

Between 2017 and 2021, Johnson served as US Ambassador to the United Kingdom under former president Donald Trump.

During this time, he visited Liverpool in 2020, after he claimed the economic benefits of the city make it the ‘New York City of Europe’.

Despite all of this, Johnson is now deemed an unlikely candidate to purchase the Anfield outfit.

Johnson unlikely to take over at Liverpool

After it was announced that the Glazer family had put Manchester United up for sale, talk of investment into Liverpool shrunk ever so slightly.

Analysts who spoke with The Athletic claim the Red Devils are a more enticing prospect for investors compared with the Merseyside club, due to a more globalised fanbase.

However, recent news broke of Saudi and Qatari-based consortiums plotting to make moves for Liverpool.

Although they may yet show an interest in United, FSG have been able to narrow down their list of potential buyers.

A lot of these US-led investors own teams in other sports over in the States, making the likes of Johnson unlikely propositions.

Either way, we’re still a very long way off FSG completing a hand-over of Liverpool.
