Report: Liverpool could finally sign ‘special’ Chelsea star as Blues consider January sale

Liverpool are long-term admirers of Christian Pulisic and Chelsea could put him up for sale, according to reports. The Reds would face competition, however.

This comes from the Daily Mail. They report that Christian Pulisic is generating interest from Premier League sides with his performances at the World Cup.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle United are all named as holding a current interest – or at least, they did within the last year. It’s thought that interest remains from all three.

Liverpool, though, are apparently ‘long-term admirers’ of Pulisic. There have certainly been reports dating back years that the Reds like him, with the American having been one of the first names linked with the club after Jurgen Klopp’s arrival.

Of course, he ended up joining Chelsea but hasn’t quite made the mark there that many expected. Frank Lampard called him a ‘special’ player recently but he never found regular form from Pulisic. Neither have Thomas Tuchel or Graham Potter. He’s now in the final 18 months of his contract, with the Blues considering a sale in January. They’d rather cash-in now, it’s thought, than wait until the last year of his deal and find themselves in a weaker position.

Liverpool admire Christian Pulisic as Chelsea consider sale

We have no real doubt that Jurgen Klopp could work wonders with Pulisic. The American is still somehow only 24 and may not enter his actual prime for another year or two. That’s typically the kind of player the Liverpool player thrives with.

Throw in his pace and it’s easy to see how Klopp would use him. It’s just questionable whether the Reds actually need him.

Really, the only slot available in the forward line is as backup to Mohamed Salah. We find it hard to believe that Pulisic would settle for that when other sides would put him in their XI. We imagine Chelsea’s asking-price would far exceed what Liverpool may pay for a backup winger.

So while the Reds are admirers, we’re not sure the timing is correct.
