‘As long as I play’: World Cup star Liverpool reportedly want removes major obstacle for transfer

Cody Gakpo discussed his future on Sunday and removed an obstacle for any transfer to Liverpool. The Dutchman is playing at the World Cup.

Liverpool supposedly want Cody Gakpo. That’s according to Hans Kraay, a Dutch journalist per ESPN. He claims that Pep Lijnders leads the charge, viewing the Dutchman as a wonderful player who the Reds should want.

And that’s something he’s gotten correct before.

Gakpo appears to be open to a transfer, though Liverpool are far from the only team interested in him. Manchester United and Arsenal are two other sides pushing for a transfer.

And why wouldn’t they? Gakpo has nine goals and 12 assists in 14 Eredivisie appearances this season. He won the Dutch Footballer of the Year award last season, too, and now he’s scoring at the World Cup.

There’s always been a problem with Liverpool wanting him, though. Gakpo plays on the left wing for PSV Eindhoven and that’s just about the last position they need to strengthen. Luis Díaz is a world-class option there, after all, while both Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota score goals from there.

But perhaps comments from Gakpo on Sunday suggest that’s not the obstacle for a transfer that it should be.

Cody Gakpo could make Liverpool transfer

“At PSV I am always left winger,” said Gakpo, per De Telegraaf. “Here we play without a left winger.

“So I don’t really care where I stand, as long as I play.”

Gakpo doesn’t care where he plays, then, and his performances suggest it’s not an issue, either. Liverpool could perhaps justify a move with that in mind, with the player possibly being able to operate at right-wing and in midfield. Maybe he could even be a successor to Roberto Firmino in the False 9 role.

We’ve argued for that before, so it’s good to see that Gakpo doesn’t see his position as a problem. It’s an obstacle that threatened to stop any move from Liverpool in its tracks. Instead, this is one they could make work.
