Liverpool are planning to target two South American midfielders if they miss out on signing Jude Bellingham.
That’s according to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenburg. Taking to Twitter, Plettenburg reiterated that Bellingham is top of Liverpool’s wish list next summer.
Although it’s claimed that the Reds are ‘really pushing’ to sign the teenager, they reportedly won’t do so ‘at any price.’
Instead, Liverpool are said to have a plan B, just in case. Without naming names, Plettenburg reports that this plan consists of two players from South America.
To avoid things getting that far, Liverpool will reportedly have to fight off Manchester City and Real Madrid. Manchester United have also been mentioned as a possible destination for Bellingham, but Plettenburg claims they now ‘hardly have a chance.’
Guessing at Liverpool’s midfield targets
This is an intriguing update from a journalist who tends to be pretty well plugged in.
Reading between the lines, most supporters could have a pretty good guess as to who these two players are.
Firstly, Enzo Fernandez is a player who has been heavily linked to Liverpool since the start of the season. The 21-year-old has been excellent for Benfica, forcing his way into Argentina’s World Cup squad.
Then there’s Ecuadorian Moises Caicedo. Another 21-year-old, Caicedo has also been starring in Qatar, playing the full 90 minutes in both of his country’s opening two games.
Either would be an attractive option for Liverpool, but neither are anywhere close to the Bellingham bracket.
Besides, it’s very clear that Jurgen Klopp needs at least two, probably three, or even four new midfielders this summer.
This pair, alongside Bellingham, would be a hugely promising window for the Reds. With a combined age of just sixty-one Liverpool’s midfield would be sorted for the next decade.
The final player to consider here could be Flamengo’s Joao Gomes. Another to be heavily linked recently, the 21-year-old Brazilian also appears to be firmly on Liverpool’s radar, too.
