Report: Man City make promise to Guardiola that will cost Liverpool

Man City have made a promise to Pep Guardiola as he agrees a new contract, according to reports. It’s one that will cost Liverpool one way or another.

This comes from The Times. They report that Pep Guardiola has agreed to a new two-year contract with Manchester City. But you’ve likely already heard that.

At the bottom of the article, however, they mention that City have already promised Guardiola funds to improve his squad. Of course, their bottomless pit of money always allows for a bit of squad improvement but it sounds as though they’re willing to back the Spaniard in a big way.

And for City, that likely means spending another obscene amount as they did back in 2017.

Tellingly, the report mentions Jude Bellingham. Borussia Dortmund will likely sell their star asset in 2023, with reports claiming they’d want around £130m. That could even rise after the World Cup.

City have apparently got the funds for any Bellingham transfer – something of a blow to Liverpool and Real Madrid, who also pursue the player.

If City believe they have the money for Bellingham, it means they’ve got that £130m. It probably means they’ve got even more than that to spend.

Sport, on the other hand, claim Real Madrid don’t have that money and won’t meet the asking price. Their plan surrounds persuading Bellingham to want them and no one else.

There are suggestions that City’s money won’t be enough, however. Jan Aage Fjortoft believes Dortmund could refuse to sell to a state-backed club. That could leave Liverpool just needing to meet the asking price to win the race.

But either way, City will cost them. If Fjortoft is wrong, they’re likely planning on blowing everyone else out of the water. If he’s right, their willingness to pay his asking price will keep the figure astronomical.
