Report: Billionaire worth £8.3bn will bid for Man United after ruling out Liverpool

Sir Jim Ratcliffe will bid for Man United after ruling out interest in Liverpool, according to reports. He’s Britain’s richest man.

This comes from the Telegraph. They claim that Sir Jim Ratcliffe intends to bid for Manchester United after the Glazer family put them up for sale.

Ratcliffe, who Bloomberg say is worth around £8.3bn, is a United fan. In fact, the club is reportedly the only one he’d be interested in after previously wanting to focus on OGC Nice, who he also owns through his company, Ineos.

The billionaire also tried to buy Chelsea in May, however. His bid arrived late after waiting for the price to drop – but it never did. After that, he attempted to buy United in the summer after showing interest. The Glazer’s weren’t willing to listen, though.

Now he has a true opportunity and it’s one he intends to take.

Jim Ratcliffe to bid for Man United

It’s an interesting one for Liverpool, this. FSG have them up for sale, too, of course and Ratcliffe ruled himself out of the running a few weeks ago.

The fact he’s a United fan presumably inspired him to bid for them instead – or perhaps he knew something was coming. After all, he did think he could pry them away from the Glazer’s back in the summer.

So what does this mean for Liverpool? Well, it could actually be good. We wrote after news of United’s sale yesterday that it would be a disaster for FSG. Here comes an asset that stops their own sale being unique and potentially pulls buyers away from them.

That’s something United reportedly believe themselves.

However, Ratcliffe only being interested in United makes them more difficult to buy than Liverpool. Potential buyers must now compete with a staggeringly-rich billionaire determined to own the club. That’s not the case with the Reds – and certain buyers may see them as a better opportunity.

FSG will be hoping that Ratcliffe pays an absolute fortune, too. If he does, it sets the table for their own negotiations. This could be a major piece of news for Liverpool, then.
