Liverpool can sign Joao Gomes for £30m if they want to. That’s according to one Brazilian journalist talking about the Flamengo player.
Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola expects Flamengo to sell Joao Gomes in 2023. At the very least, he sees a transfer as ‘natural’ and that could mean January.
Liverpool supposedly want the 21-year-old, too. While Nicola makes it clear that there’s no offer for Gomes, he ‘certainly’ expects £30m to get him. In fact, he suggests that’s merely the upper limit – he could well leave for less next year.
If the Reds do want to add Gomes to their midfield options, the chance will be there.
Liverpool can sign Joao Gomes
We fully expect Liverpool to make moves for midfielders in 2023. They’re in dire need of it anyway, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner are all out of contract next summer.
Though, we can’t claim to know too much about Gomes. This certainly isn’t the first time Liverpool have been mentioned as interested, though. There very well might be something there and a January move could make sense.
After all, the Brazilian season goes year-to-year and January is the obvious time for them to sell. We imagine Flamengo are very open to selling this winter, then, if Nicola is right.

£30m does feel steep, though. Nicola admits that and doesn’t think Liverpool would actually offer that – but it’s substantially lower than other fees we’ve heard. Sport claimed back in September that Gomes’s release clause sat at £53m and Flamengo may want teams to pay it.
That would be ridiculous, as we wrote at the time. Even £30m feels steep for a relatively untested player.
But Gomes does have some hype about him and would be an injection of youth in Liverpool’s midfield. For the right price, he might be a smart January addition.
