Reported Liverpool transfer target Cody Gakpo has sent Virgil van Dijk a message following Holland’s win over Senegal yesterday.
Gakpo has been a standout name in the run-up to the tournament, with plenty of rumours flying around about his future.
At international level though, he is, of course, a teammate of Liverpool’s towering No.4. And as Van Dijk took to Instagram to celebrate the Netherlands 2-0 win over the African Champions, Gakpo responded in kind.
“Up and running,” wrote Van Dijk, to which the PSV Eindhoven man reacted with two emojis: one ‘praise’ emoji, followed by a love heart.
No words needed from Gakpo, who could well find himself sharing a dressing room with Virgil at club level, too.
Gakpo and van Dijk lead the way for Holland
Gakpo got himself a goal yesterday, as he perhaps added a little more value to his potential sale.
No surprise there really, it’s what he does. The 23-year-old has been in scintillating form for club and country this season.
Indeed, if the Netherlands are to have a successful World Cup, a lot will depend on both he and Van Dijk.
The Dutch are nice and solid in defence, with options like Matthijs de Ligt, Nathan Ake and Stefan de Vrij to compliment Virgil.
But the Liverpool defender is still the main man. He showed that again yesterday. As Ake and de Ligt struggled to get going fully, Van Dijk stood firm.
Going forward, it’s a bit of a different story. So often boasting such special attacking talent, Holland look a little light this time around.
Gakpo is the exception to that. It may be just one game in, but it’s already apparent why Liverpool are said to be so interested in securing his signature.
According to Calciomercato, a move in January is likely to cost them at least £43m. As the competition progresses, and Van Dijk and Gakpo link up again, that could start looking like a price well worth paying.
