Dejan Lovren says Mo Salah is ‘100 per cent’ jealous of his place at the World Cup. How could the Liverpool star not be?
Dejan Lovren talked about his friend, and former Liverpool teammate, Mohamed Salah this week. Lovren is gearing up for another World Cup campaign with Croatia, while Salah looks for something to do until the Reds’ Dubai training camp.
Egypt failed to qualify, after all. They lost their World Cup play-off against Senegal, condemning Salah to another missed tournament. No wonder, then, that Lovren says he’s jealous.
“100 per cent [Salah is jealous],” said Lovren, per the Liverpool Echo. “I would also be jealous.
“What’s he been saying? That he will support me. I mean, it’s nice to hear that, but to be honest I’m sad that he didn’t qualify.
“He was so close, but Mane was better. He has said he will come – with a Croatia flag!”
Mo Salah with no place at the World Cup
It’s bitterly disappointing for Salah that he misses the World Cup. The Egyptian is in such great form for Liverpool, too, scoring for fun over the last little while. There’s not really any doubt that he’d have thrived in Qatar.
And so of course he’s jealous. Salah is one of the absolute best players on the planet and yet he’s watching the World Cup from home. And doesn’t even have an injury to blame.
Liverpool, however, will be delighted. They’ll hope that a month’s rest allows for Salah to find his highest level over the second half of the season and we imagine he’ll do just that.
And he’s not alone. Liverpool boast an incredible selection of players not at the tournament. If they can all rest up and find their best form in 2023, the Reds will end up looking back on the World Cup as a defining point in their season.
