'Always there': Van Dijk thinks two of his Liverpool teammates may end up as World Cup winners

Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk has named Brazil as one of the favourites to lift the World Cup next month.

Speaking to Reuters ahead of the tournament, the Holland captain suggested that Liverpool’s teammates Fabinho and Alisson Becker could be set for glory.

“For me, Argentina, Brazil and France are the favourite countries,” explained Van Dijk.

“The Brazilians are always there. The Argentines are strong and the French have a great selection. We have a good group, we have a very experienced trainer, but above all we have team spirit.”

With Ibrahima Konate’s France also namechecked by the centre-back, it seems as though Virgil is confident of a winner’s medal ending up at Liverpool.

Reds looking to add themselves to exclusive list

It would be great if one or two of Liverpool’s seven players at the World Cup could win the trophy this winter.

In total, only five players have won the tournament whilst playing for the club. Given Liverpool’s status as one of the world’s leading sides, this is a remarkable statistic.

Only twice have the World Cup winners contained Reds players in their squad. Firstly, England’s win on home soil in 1966 contained the Liverpool trio of Roger Hunt, Gerry Byrne and Ian Callaghan.

There was then a 44-year wait until Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina conquered the world with Spain in 2010.

Of those five players, only Torres played any minutes at all in the final itself.

With those kinds of odds, it feels a long shot that Liverpool will find anyone adding to that exclusive list in this year’s edition.

Having said that, as Van Dijk points out, the Reds have players making up the squads of some of the favourites. Added to the Brazilian and French trio, Van Dijk himself will be quietly confident of having a go with his Netherlands side.

Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson will also be planning an assault with England. It would be a surprise if Darwin Nunez were the man to bring it home, but Uruguay also have a heck of a squad.

All to play for Reds, all the best!
