RB Leipzig are ‘ready to do business’ with Liverpool over a move for midfielder Konrad Laimer, according to TEAMtalk journalist Graeme Bailey.
The Austria international is out of contract at the end of the season, and there is the possibility that he could be allowed to leave in January to avoid a free transfer in the summer.
Throughout the previous window, the 25-year-old came close to securing a Bundesliga switch to Bayern Munich. However, Leipzig ultimately decided against giving him the green light to move. Instead, they said they favoured a transfer abroad.
However, going into the January window, the German outfit are reportedly willing to cash-in on the player. Speaking with TEAMtalk, Bailey revealed:
“One name very much in contention is Konrad Laimer,” he said.
“The Austrian saw a move to Bayern Munich fall through, but now he very much has his options open. He is out of contract in the summer and RB Leipzig are ready to do business.
“He has just returned from injury and will be fully fit for the season re-start, and Liverpool do like him.”
Liverpool interested in Konrad Laimer
When the Reds looked like they were going to sign a quality first-team midfielder in the summer, Laimer was touted as one of the favourites to make the move to Anfield.
Fans were extremely excited at the prospect, but this ended up being another addition which failed to come to fruition.
As per the Bundesliga’s official website, the 25-year-old plays like Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante. The midfielder shows incredible determination to win the ball back in the middle of the park, demonstrating staggering physicality in the way he is able to get up and down the pitch. For this, Austria forward Marko Arnautovic has said the amount of ground he covers is ‘crazy’.
His intense pressing is aided by his shielding of the ball when in possession. Laimer is able to recycle the play from tight spaces, facilitating counter-attacks on the break. As a result, he is known as a proper ball-winning midfielder. He is not scared to do the dirty work for his manager.
Available to sign on a pre-contract in January, Liverpool could guarantee themselves a brilliant addition to Jurgen Klopp’s squad on a free transfer.
However, this depends on the interest surrounding him in the winter. If the likes of Bayern return with a cash-bid, the Reds would have to do the same. They could try to tie his services down early on in the window, but this leaves risk to a permanent move elsewhere.
Therefore, the Merseyside club should buy him in January, as they will be getting a fantastic player for a cut-price. And it’s also not like Klopp couldn’t do with another midfielder now anyway.
