Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has praised Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker’s passing skills.
The Dutch goalkeeper was one of the best goalies of his generation. Brought up in the renowned Ajax academy, van der Sar was something of a pioneer in more proactive goalkeeping. And speaking to The Athletic, he praised the level that today’s ‘keepers, including Alisson, have reached.
“Nowadays the goalkeepers, they are amazing in how they can put the ball with the left foot and the right foot,” said the 52-year-old.
“Alisson and Ederson are two great examples, the way they hit the ball is inch-perfect on the crest of the jersey. My game was more about coming outside the box to anticipate and intercept a through ball. They have become much more 11 playing.”
That’s good praise for Liverpool’s No.1 from one of the most respected goalkeepers in the history of the game.
Alisson the very best of the best right now
It’s no surprise to hear Alisson coming in for praise. The Brazilian showed yet again that he is the very best in the world right now with his display against Southampton on Saturday.
Then, it was his shot-stopping ability that was on full display. But arguably what makes Alisson the best is his all-round game.
In today’s game, and particularly the way Liverpool play, it’s no good simply being a great saver of goals. If that were all it took, the Reds could look to ‘keeper like Nick Pope and still be fine.
Instead, the top, top goalies are expected to play with their feet as much as their hands. Thankfully for Liverpool, Alisson is a master at this.
We’ve seen that already this season to great effect. The 30-year-old picked up yet another assist for Liverpool with his pinpoint ball to Mohamed Salah against Manchester City.
Remarkably, that was Alisson’s third assist for Salah in his four-and-a-bit seasons at Anfield. That’s as good a stat as any to show off his excellent passing pedigree.
As a Brazilian goalkeeper, Ali will be expected to display similar attributes at the World Cup. Not renowned for producing brilliant goalies, the Liverpool man, as well as Ederson, is now bucking that trend.
Without club football to look forward to, Brazil will be many Liverpool fans team of choice in Qatar. Should Alisson claim a World Cup winners medal with his country, his legend will be cemented once and for all.
