'Always been hype': Liverpool player hasn't shown his 'real' self despite over 80 games

Curtis Jones doesn’t believe he’s shown off his ‘real’ self at Liverpool. The 21-year-old has played over 80 games for the Reds.

Curtis Jones signed a new contract with Liverpool this week, tying him to the Reds long-term. The 21-year-old has been with the club since he was six and shows no desire to slow down.

In fact, Jones believes there’s a lot more to come from him. He’s played 81 games for Liverpool but doesn’t think he’s shown his ‘real’ self out there. That’s something he wants to fix soon.

“I would say, really putting a marker out there [is my next step],” Jones told LFCTV. “Since I came around the team, there’s always been hype around me and I’ve been the young kid who’s coming in. I’m a Scouser and I’ve scored important goals and stuff.

“But I don’t think I’ve really shown the real me. As I spoke then I spoke a lot about how I’ve changed my game and that I’m adapting, I’m maturing and stuff. So I feel that’s coming together as one now.

“Now’s the time to go out there and show the real me, start scoring more goals and assisting more goals and helping the team even more.”

We think Jones is absolutely right on this. Part of the problem is that he’s come into the senior setup and immediately had to learn a new position as a centre-midfielder.

In the youth setup, Jones was always a more attacking player. He liked to get on the ball and run at players, driving between the lines and making things happen. But he’s become more and more withdrawn over the last few years.

We believe that’s largely because he’s focused on playing ‘safer’ as a midfielder. The fact that he can carry the ball so well – and data suggests he does it fantastically – should be a massive advantage in midfield. He needs to show more confidence to do it, however.

Hopefully, that comes this season. We think this is a massive season for Jones and one where he should firmly establish a place in the squad. It sounds as though he intends to do just that.
