Andy Robertson picked his Liverpool 5-a-side team this week and included a surprise name from his teammates. The Scot had to put himself in there, of course.

Andy Robertson gave an interview for Pitch Side this week, where he picked his Liverpool 5-a-side team. The left-back even included one surprise name.

“I’d go Alisson Becker,” said Robertson. “Am I in it? Okay, I’m the captain and Virgil [van Dijk] can sit on the bench. I’m going 1-2-1, so sorry Virg – out.

“Midfield, I would go Thiago and I would go [Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain]. [For his] shooting of a ball, great shooter. So I would say Ox and then up top I’d go [Mohamed Salah].”

“Only problem I’m worried about is the work rate. The three lads in front of me’s work rate. One goalie, one defender and three attackers – so I’ve given myself a lot of work.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain is the surprise name, of course. The 29-year-old only has one start for Liverpool this season – coming in the EFL Cup last week.

An injury has kept him out of the side. That’s unfortunately not a surprise, given his injury record since joining Liverpool. When he’s at his best, though, Oxlade-Chamberlain absolutely gets the nod in a team like this.

He’s explosive, smart on the ball and as Robertson says, he has a fantastic shot on him. Literally, the only thing that has held Oxlade-Chamberlain back at Liverpool is his fitness.

Whenever he’s had a consistent run in the side, we’ve seen a truly outstanding player and one who can take the game to anyone. It’s been nearly five years now but his efforts in that Champions League Quarter-Final against Manchester City were extraordinary.

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s contract expires at the end of the season and it feels unlikely that he gets a new one. Liverpool need to refresh their midfield anyway, after all.

Hopefully, there’s still time to see Oxlade-Chamberlain at his absolute best in Red. One more great run would be fantastic.
