Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has ruled out a prospective move to Premier League rivals Liverpool.
Speaking in an interview with German outlet Kicker, the former Borussia Dortmund star has claimed he won’t be reuniting with manager Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

As per a previous report from The Mirror, the Sky Blues have given the Germany international permission to speak to other clubs, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. As a result, the Merseyside outfit were linked with a move for the 32-year-old.
However, when questioned by Kicker about the possibility of this becoming a reality, the Etihad favourite responded:
“I think I can rule out that happening,” he said
“Everyone knows how much I like and appreciate Kloppo. But I’ve been at City for a few years now.
“And now as City captain to rival Liverpool? No, I cannot imagine [it].”
Gundogan rules out reunion with Klopp
Despite the pair having showered praise on the other in recent years, the idea of a Man City player joining Liverpool seems somewhat impossible.
In recent seasons, the two heavyweights have gone head-to-head, with Pep Guardiola’s side often coming out on top in the league table.
Although Everton and Manchester United remain as huge club rivalries at Anfield, the Reds are seen as City’s main competitor on the pitch.
Therefore, the idea of Gundogan joining the Reds was never truly plausible.

However, what a signing it would have been. Liverpool are currently in dire need of reinforcements in the middle of the park, and the German would have been the perfect addition to Klopp’s midfield.
Labelled as ‘superb’ by journalist Sam Dean, the 32-year-old’s intricate passing and playmaking ability would have complimented Thiago completely. Taking the burden off the Spaniard, the Reds would be able to create chances from either side of the pitch. This would also relieve the stress placed on Fabinho, as Gundogan has demonstrated strong defensive qualities whilst playing in City’s midfield.
Therefore, whilst he may have been a decent short-term solution, Liverpool need something more long-term as they look to revamp their squad.
Either way, this domestic switch was never going to happen in the first place.
