Virgil van Dijk shared his reaction to Alisson Becker shaving his beard ahead of a wonderful display for Liverpool against Southampton. It seemed to work.
Alisson Becker was arguably the standout performer for Liverpool as they beat Southampton. The Reds wouldn’t have won the game without him, certainly, as the Brazilian pulled off some sensational saves.
Liverpool eventually won the game 3-1, with Alisson earning rave reviews after the game. A couple of second-half saves were truly remarkable – the kind very few on the planet could pull off. Let alone in the same game of football.
And people were talking about Alisson anyway. The Brazilian shaved off his beard ahead of the match, quite drastically changing his look. Virgil van Dijk was quick to point it out after the game as he lauded his teammate’s performance.
“I said to him ‘you look like an American guy’, just a random guy!” said Van Dijk, per the Liverpool Echo. “He sometimes does it and this was how he prepared himself for the World Cup, but what a guy.
“We have a great relationship with him and hopefully he will do well in the World Cup.
“You shouldn’t take anyone for granted and he’s had a very successful last six years. We certainly never do that. He’s important for the group on and off the pitch.
“We don’t want him to have to make saves, first and foremost. He had to do so [against Southampton] and he was outstanding.”

As Harvey Elliott said after the game, perhaps Alisson needs to shave more regularly. Even by his standards, this was a magnificent performance.

It’s never a particularly good sign when your goalkeeper is putting in a match-winning display against a relegation-threatened side, of course. Still, Liverpool have lost to relegation-threatened sides this season – so thank God Alisson was as good as he was.
He has a case as Liverpool’s best player this season and, certainly, their most consistent. The best in the world, as we see it. Beard or no beard.
