Liverpool’s coaching staff were delighted by how Darwin Nunez exploited the space in behind Spurs’ defence during the side’s recent 2-1 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As reported in The Athletic, after spending time working on his movement on the training pitch, Jurgen Klopp’s team were impressed to see the 23-year-old putting this work into practise.

Against Tottenham, the Uruguay international exploited the space in behind right-back Emerson Royal, which consequently caused a lot of problems for centre-back Eric Dier.

Causing chaos amongst the Lilywhites’ defence, Nunez bagged himself an assist as the side came away with a crucial three points against a top-four rival.

For this emphatic performance, the attacker was ranked as Liverpool’s best player alongside Mohamed Salah, who scored twice to ensure the Reds’ victory.

Klopp’s staff impressed with Nunez

Since arriving on Merseyside this summer, pundits have been unfairly critical of the 23-year-old striker.

Although his technical ability when dribbling with the ball is still relatively raw, Nunez’s strengths have been downplayed as a result.

Having already clocked the fastest speed ever by any player in the Premier League, the Uruguay international’s physical attributes have been more than impressive this term.

On top of his electric speed, Nunez is extremely strong when challenging for the ball. His dominant presence in the air allows for an all-round style of play, as his blistering strike means he can finish from anywhere in the final third.

As a youngster, it was always going to take time for him to adapt to life on Merseyside. Coming from Benfica, the English game will have been completely different to what he’s previously known, so nine goals in his opening 18 games is actually very impressive.

Upon his arrival, the youngster was far too eager to score. Needing to relax, he scuppered a few chances – evident he was thirsting to open his account at Anfield.

Over time, Nunez will become more confident in his own abilities. With every characteristic to succeed at the highest level, there couldn’t be a better club or manager for the striker to learn from.

Therefore, it is truly exciting to see the 23-year-old firing at Anfield.
