Stan Collymore tells Liverpool’s potential new owners what they must spend in order to compete with Manchester City. It isn’t going to be cheap.

FSG appear to have put Liverpool entirely up for sale – that’s the suggestion from the likes of David Ornstein, anyway. The Reds’ owners have admitted that they’re seeking a minority investment, but it could well be that they sell the club entirely.

And if that happens, the new owners have a massive challenge on their hands. They’ll need to find a way to keep Liverpool competitive against the likes of Manchester City and presumably Newcastle United. The two clubs are owned by nation-states and bankrolled to incredible levels as a result.

So what would it cost to compete? Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore gave his opinion to the Mirror this week. It won’t be cheap.

“If someone came in tomorrow and said, ‘Jurgen, the club has been sold, there’s a project with £250million per window for four windows, go and take on Pep Guardiola’, you’d see the rejuvenation of Klopp overnight,” writes Collymore. “If he could go again with a new cycle it would be huge for the Premier League.

“The fact is that if Liverpool, or anyone else, are going to challenge City in the coming years they will have to spend £200m per transfer window until, a, you see Pep Guardiola off out of the country and, b, you’ve had the time to create a dynasty of your own.”

Liverpool’s potential new owners

Well, £200m is a ridiculous suggestion. We’re not even sure it would cost £200m total to get this squad up to speed, given the quality that’s already there. £200m per transfer window? No, it won’t cost that.

Even £200m per summer is an insane suggestion – no one can afford that, not even the likes of City. As long as Liverpool have Jurgen Klopp, it won’t cost anything like those numbers.

The question is what it will take post-Klopp. And whether it’s even possible to compete at the very, very top without him. Having the right manager and setup is the true make-or-break when competing at the top, after all.

Take Guardiola away from City and they’re not near Liverpool over the last few years. Even with the same spending. It’s obviously a similar situation with Klopp at Anfield.

Spending is certainly a big factor and Liverpool will need it to refresh the squad. Keeping hold of Klopp, though, and making sure he has what he needs, is truly the most important challenge for any potential new owner.
