‘Out of sorts for a while’: Pundit thinks Liverpool player’s ‘confidence’ finally returned this weekend

Garth Crooks saw a sign in Andy Robertson’s form this weekend. The defender helped Liverpool to a 3-1 win over Southampton.

Garth Crooks named two Liverpool players in his Team of the Week for the BBC this weekend. Andy Robertson and Darwin Nunez got the nod – though, we’re not sure how Alisson Becker wasn’t in there.

In Robertson, though, Crooks saw a lot to be positive about. He doesn’t think the Scot has been in great form this season – but Saturday saw a return to his best.

“This lad has been out of sorts for a while now – for some reason he’s certainly not been himself,” said Crooks. “Against a Southampton side who seemed to respond to the arrival of new boss Nathan Jones, Andy Robertson looked like his confidence had returned.

“When Robertson is on his game there isn’t a better left-back in the country. He produced two excellent assists, his first for Roberto Firmino and his second for Darwin Nunez.

“With Scotland out of the World Cup, I’m not entirely sure Robertson will relish twiddling his thumbs for a month having got his form back.”

Andy Robertson’s form

Few at Liverpool have been at their best this season, Robertson included. We still think he’s been pretty decent, though, all things considered.

But Saturday was unquestionably an example of the Scot at his best. He was magnificent as a creative force from the left, fully deserving his assist for Darwin Nunez.

His free-kick was a nice one, too – even if Roberto Firmino did most of the work for that particular goal. That now means Robertson boasts four assists for the season, which is a figure only six players can better in the Premier League this season.

We’re saying it about half the team but hopefully, the break this winter will allow Robertson to truly find consistency over the second half of the campaign.
