Harvey Elliott’s pass at the weekend was one of the best all season, says John Aldridge. The Liverpool great loved what he saw.

Darwin Nunez grabbed the headlines against Southampton, of course, with his two goals. Alisson Becker then received plaudits for wrapping the points up with a string of fine saves. But Harvey Elliott, too, deserved praise.

The 19-year-old was brilliant in midfield and created Liverpool’s second goal. His pass for Nunez to score was virtually perfect and earned the highest praise from John Aldridge on Monday.

“Young Harvey Elliott too, what a ball!” Aldridge told the Liverpool Echo. “It was one of the best passes of the season, it was a magnificent ball to Nunez for the second goal.

“Now we’ve seen it, that’s what he’s got to do more of. It’s what he’s in the team for because – even though he’s only a kid – he’s got to get goals and assists as he’s the most attacking player out of the midfield three, but that will come if he continues to work on his game.

“He has great ability.”

Harvey Elliott’s pass

This is the kind of quality Liverpool hope to see regularly from Elliott. We’re not quite seeing it enough but it’s there – as Aldridge says, we just need to see the £40k-a-week player produce more of it.

The fact that he can get into the XI despite being a little inconsistent going forward shows his true quality, though. Elliott can do all of the dirty work, be it drifting wide to allow Mohamed Salah to move the other away, or pressing the exact way Jurgen Klopp wants him to.

Elliott naturally does all of that without a fuss – something incredibly rare to find in a young player. Once he consistently produces passes like the one we saw at Anfield, Liverpool will have a near-perfect midfielder.
