‘I can see why’: Rio Ferdinand says the ‘last three weeks’ changed his mind on Darwin Nunez

Rio Ferdinand says the last three weeks changed his opinion on Darwin Nunez. The Liverpool striker scored a brace at the weekend.

Darwin Nunez helped Liverpool to a 3-1 win over Southampton on Saturday. He scored twice at Anfield – the two goals that made the difference.

Nunez now boasts five Premier League goals and nine in all competitions. In fact, since the game against Arsenal, Nunez has scored in all but four appearances, only two of which were starts. That drops to one start if you count assists.

It’s been a fantastic run of form, then, as the 23-year-old shows remarkable consistency for a player at a new club. It’s been enough, it seems, to change some minds on Nunez.

“Everyone was looking at Nunez and saying ‘ah, flop – he’s not been great’ and comparing him to [Erling] Haaland,” Rio Ferdinand told his FIVE YouTube channel. “But the last three weeks or so, I can see why you’ve been bought.

“His endeavour will get him goals.”

It’s nice to see people are coming around to Nunez – though, the fact he’s scoring goals regularly makes it pretty impossible to doubt him. What’s strange is that it’s taken this long.

To be fair to Ferdinand, he hasn’t been anywhere near as dismissive of Nunez as some. Many wrote him off or declared that the likes of Mohamed Salah couldn’t play with him.

Instead, it turns out that Nunez is just a young player dropping into a struggling side in a country where he doesn’t speak the language. Jurgen Klopp was always adamant that he’d come good – and that he has.

Nunez now looks like one of the most dangerous strikers in Europe. We expect him to score in every game, in fact, as he’s just a magnet for chances. Defenders can’t get near him across 90 minutes – and there’s a sense that he’s still nowhere near his best.
