The company of Mukesh Ambani, Reliance, has addressed claims that the billionaire wants to buy Liverpool. The Reds are up for sale.
The Mirror reported over the weekend that Mukesh Ambani, the world’s eighth-richest person, wants to buy Liverpool. It comes after FSG directed banks to seek new investment in the club. That could mean a minority stake, or it could mean an outright sale.
Talk that Ambani would pump millions into Liverpool’s transfer funds appeared to push him to the front of any sale, too. However, it appears that this was never on the cards.
Indian outlet ABP carries a statement from Reliance, Ambani’s company, on the reports. They deny that he wants to buy Liverpool, quoting a source as saying the claims are ‘fake’.
Mukesh Ambani unlikely to buy Liverpool
It’s a strange one. The Mirror wouldn’t have put out an exclusive like this without some sort of source on it – it’s a very specific article to speculate with or completely invent.
It’s difficult to say what happened, then. Perhaps Ambani did have interest but FSG knocked him back? David Ornstein, who initially broke news of FSG seeking investment, claims certain approaches have already been rejected.

Perhaps Ambani was one of those. Or maybe someone has simply misled the Mirror here. That remains a very possible and perhaps most likely option.
But Liverpool fans need to brace for this kind of thing over the next few months. The club is an enormous asset for anyone and merely being linked with a purchase boosts your profile significantly. Certain people and groups will lineup for that kind of exposure.
And, of course, claiming news on the process is a wonderful way to drive clicks to your website. There will be a lot of information thrown about – as we’ve seen just one week into the public sale process.
