‘Sources have told me’: Journalist hears big change at Liverpool is directly related to ‘potential sale’

David Ornstein hears that a significant change at Liverpool is directly related to a potential sale. The Reds’s owners FSG are making moves.

David Ornstein broke the news of Liverpool’s potential sale last week for the Athletic. He now has an update on the situation for Sky Sports, including ‘rumours’ of rejected approaches.

FSG already see change at Liverpool, though. Things are far from standing still and Mike Gordon, who has overseen the club for the last decade, changed his role recently. Ornstein believes that’s completely related to the sale, even if official talk suggests otherwise.

“You’re seeing the signs already that things are starting to change at Anfield because of Mike Gordon, who has been in charge of operations from a day-to-day perspective,” says Ornstein.

“We reported and it was also in the Boston Globe, which is owned by John Henry himself, that Gordon is going to be taking a step back and Billy Hogan, the chief executive, is going to be taking on greater responsibility.

“It’s being described as a natural evolution but sources have told me that Mike Gordon will be working on the potential sale and focusing on that.”

Potential sale at Liverpool

It’s a big move for Liverpool. It doesn’t sound as though Gordon will be back in his role, after all – which surely points to an all-out sale.

Because that’s the big question that remains. Are FSG truly looking for a full sale or just a minority investment? They’re openly admitting to the latter but the former is the suggestion from journalists.

Gordon taking a step back for the sake of the sale is a true sign that FSG seek a complete transfer of power. We’re not sure how else to take that.

Liverpool, then, appear well on their way to new ownership. The next few months will be massive.
