Reported Liverpool transfer target Seko Fofana is likely to be available next summer for around £35m.
That’s according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. Speaking to Caught Offside, the transfer expert shared the latest on the Liverpool-linked Ivorian.
“There’s been some speculation in recent days linking Seko Fofana as a target for Arsenal and Liverpool,” he said. “I don’t know yet where he’ll end up, but I can give my current understanding of his situation.
“Seko Fofana has a new agent now and he’s obviously working to find solutions for 2023. At the moment it is still early, nothing advanced; but he can be an opportunity not just for Premier League clubs, also in other leagues. His price tag could be around €40m [£35m].
Fofana, who captains Lens, has been a key player this season as they find themselves second in the Ligue 1 table.
Fofana set to return to England?
On the face of it, Fofana would like a decent fit for Liverpool. He’s dynamic, robust and a goal threat from midfield.
At twenty-seven, he’s maybe slightly older than the Reds preferred age bracket. But on the flip side, he’s coming into his prime as a midfielder and £35m isn’t a terrifically high price.
What may slightly concern Liverpool is that he’s yet to play at a top team. That in itself isn’t necessarily a problem, but for someone with as much football behind them as Fofana, it may be hard to adjust to the highest level.
Fofana does have experience of elite academy level football, though. Interestingly, the Ivory Coast international joined Manchester City from Lorient as an 18-year-old.
He then spent three years flitting between academy football and heading out on loan.
One of those loan spells gave him a half-season in the Championship with Fulham. So, Fofana does have a good grounding in terms of English football.
With the news that he has changed agent, Fofana looks set to be on his way out of Lens in the coming months. There’s no chance of him being Liverpool’s top target in midfield, but as a supplementary option, he’d be pretty well perfect, really.
