Calvin Ramsay showed that he’s ready for the first team at Liverpool with an impressive display against Derby County last night.
It was a big night for the 19-year-old as he made his first ever start for the Reds. Injury issues had limited him to a 10-minute cameo in the senior team so far.
But having impressed for the U21s since his recovery, he was always likely to get the nod in the Carabao Cup third round.
With a big Premier League game to come on Saturday, Jurgen Klopp couldn’t risk Trent Alexander-Arnold. Joe Gomez also saddled up in the centre of defence, meaning Ramsay was the logical option for the manager.
And, despite not everything he tried coming off, the young Scot looked a cut above some of his academy teammates. Once the World Cup break is over, we’ll surely be seeing much more of him in a Liverpool shirt.

Full Liverpool debut tops of brilliant day for Ramsay
After such a long time out with injury, Liverpool fans finally got a good look at Ramsay last night.
It was by no means a perfect display, there were obvious signs of rustiness at times. But by and large, the teenager showed why Klopp recently called him a ‘fantastic’ talent via BBC Sport.
Perhaps most impressively, Ramsay appears to be quite two-footed. He was more than happy cutting inside and attempting cross and passes from his left foot.
In a role was demanding as the right-back position for Liverpool is, that’s a good weapon to have.

Alexander-Arnold can often be seen drifting in-field from his position on the right. If Ramsay can use either foot so effectively, this is a job he should be able to master as well.
And with Trent looking likely to go to the World Cup, he may be needed more and more in the second half of the season. Liverpool won’t want to overload their No.66, and in Ramsay, they look to have an able deputy.
On the back of winning a first ever call-up to the Scotland senior team, it was quite the day for the right-back yesterday.
From the little evidence we have so far, he’ll be a fixture in both Scotland and Liverpool squads for years to come.
