France manager Didier Deschamps has revealed why he selected Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate in his World Cup squad.
Taking to a press conference after his 25-man shortlist was announced, the national team boss hailed the 23-year-old’s praises.
“You’re not a starter at that age in a Liverpool team which were European champions by accident,” he said.
To date, the Reds centre-back has only made two appearances under Deschamps – the first of which, came back in June.
Deschamps selects Konate for France
Since arriving at Anfield last year in a deal worth £36m, the former RB Leipzig defender has demonstrated why he was worth every single penny Liverpool spent signing him.
Due to a knee injury, the youngster has only made four appearances for the Reds this season.
Having started three of four of these games, Jurgen Klopp’s side came away with a win in each, having conceded just two goals throughout.
The Frenchman’s incredible size and strength enables him to power his way through challenges, making him a very proficient tackler of the ball.
Not only that, but Konate is also blessed with a burst of pace. Although he is able to read the game well, this speed allows last-ditch tackles to be made when needed. This often comes when the ball has been played in behind the defence, and the 23-year-old is covering for one of his teammates.
From outside looking in, it appears Konate is the perfect package. Alongside his physical attributes, his great work-ethic and attitude have often been praised by the coaching staff at Kirkby.
Therefore, with his first major international tournament now in sight, we can expect to see the Liverpool player embark on an illustrious career with the France national team – and hopefully with the Reds, too.
