Young Anderlecht centre-back Zeno Debast has been called into Belgium’s World Cup squad, after claims that Liverpool are scouting him.
As per journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, the 19-year-old has been selected as part of Roberto Martinez’s group.
Debast, who won both of his senior caps in September, has been impressing in the Belgian league this season.
According to 90min just last month, his commanding displays have caught the eye of Liverpool.
With the teenager now potentially about to perform on the biggest of stages, no doubt Reds scouts will continue to monitor him.
Europe’s biggest and brightest circle Debast
Debast looks like a brilliant prospect. He has quickly become one of the first names on the teamsheet at Anderlecht.
As it’s one of the smaller leagues in Europe, these kinds of players don’t tend to hang around in Belgium long.
As a result, it’s surely just a matter of time until we see Debast at a bigger club. Along with Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund are also said to be taking a keen interest in the defender.
That could be bad news for Liverpool, as the German club tend to have a way with words when it comes to young stars.
But if Debast is able to show what he can do in Qatar, he may become out of reach for Dortmund. The Reds will soon be searching for a successor for Virgil Van Dijk, and that could be an attractive prospect for a young player.
That’s all to come, though. First of all, the youngster will have full focus on making an impression with his country.
A good World Cup can thrust players suddenly into the spotlight. Having probably not expected to make the squad at the start of the season, Debast now needs to take his chance with both hands.
If he does, perhaps we’ll even see him in a Liverpool shirt in the future.
