A potential bidder for the takeover of Liverpool has shared the price FSG have quoted them on a sale.

As per The Times, sources have indicated that rather than a search for investment, the Liverpool owners hope to sell the club outright.

One source, who is said to be a ‘senior figure’ in a consortium that tried to buy Chelsea earlier this year, said the following:

“We are being guided that any offer has to be more than £3 billion.”

While not necessarily a surprise, this hefty price-tag does rather limit the pool of potential new owners. It would also give FSG an absolutely enormous profit on a club they paid just £300m for.

Pricing the priceless

How do you value a football club? Is it the players who add the value? Perhaps it’s the commercial success and global reach of the club? Maybe it’s the manager? The fans?

By any of these deciding factors, Liverpool should be one of the most valuable clubs on the planet.

In that respect, you have to hand it to FSG. They’ve taken steps over the last 12 years to maximise every branch of the club possible. Thus, ensuring maximum return on their investment.

It is often levelled at the Americans that they’ve simply been in it for this very moment. They weren’t bothered about the success of the club, so long as it retained its value.

But in reality, you can’t have one without the other. FSG aren’t perfect by absolutely any stretch, that’s clear. What has been good for them, though, has also been good for the club.

When they arrived, Anfield was looking a weary place. Now, with a capacity boosted by over 15,000 and two shiny new stands, its allure is back.

Melwood was much celebrated but badly in need of an upgrade. 12 years on, and Liverpool now boast a training facility befitting of their status within the game.

Then there’s the manager. Would Liverpool be worth £3bn with Brendan Rodgers at the helm? Probably not. Jurgen Klopp deserves all the credit for what he’s brought back to the Reds since his appointment. But who hired him?

Yes, you can knock FSG for many, many things. When all is said and done though, their steady improvements have brought the club right back to the very top. Anyone got a spare £3bn lying around?
