‘I’m told’: Journalist says a second potential Liverpool buyer has rejected making an offer

Another potential Liverpool buyer has rejected the chance to make an offer, says one journalist. The Reds are down two options.

This comes from Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph. He claims that the Ricketts family have declined the chance to make an offer for Liverpool to FSG.

The Ricketts family previously tried to buy Chelsea. They were met with fierce opposition, however, accusations of Islamaphobia were thrown at Joe Ricketts.

“I’m told the Ricketts family, who were one of the shortlisted bidders for Chelsea, will not be bidding to buy Liverpool,” Law wrote on Twitter.

They’re now the second potential buyer to reject the opportunity to buy Liverpool. It comes after Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Britain’s richest man, also denied any interest.

Potential Liverpool buyer says no

It’s significant, we feel. The group of people capable of buying Liverpool is small and will be largely the same as those who tried to buy Chelsea back in May. After all, why weren’t they trying to buy Chelsea if they want Liverpool?

While the Reds are a bigger club, they’re not so much bigger that it should sway an interest. Chelsea are still one of the world’s biggest and unlike Liverpool, were definitely available. The government forced that sale and the best offer was getting the club.

FSG can still reject the biggest offer put to them. It’s a tougher negotiation and far from a sure thing, even if you go through all of the work to get a bid together.

So Ratcliffe and the Ricketts’ were two genuine options for Liverpool as both did try to buy Chelsea. There won’t be too many more possible buyers – we’re talking three or four, if that.

The next few months promise to be fascinating, then. If FSG truly want to sell Liverpool, they may need to search far and wide for the right buyer.
