‘He was average’: Owen says ‘better and better’ Liverpool player has made unbelievable strides

Michael Owen made an observation about Mo Salah after the forward scored twice in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur. The Egyptian is getting ‘better and better’.

Mohamed Salah was unquestionably Man of the Match as Liverpool won at Tottenham on Sunday. He scored both goals in the Reds’ 2-1 win, with two fine finishes.

The first came from great buildup that got the ball to Darwin Nunez in Spurs’ box. He then found Salah, who controlled and finished in one fluid motion. Salah at his best.

Eric Dier’s awful mistake then sent the forward through on goal. Salah’s finish was perfection – he just lifted it over Hugo Loris with ease.

Michael Owen, doing punditry for Matchday Live, commented on the goals after the game. These finishes were evidence that Salah is still improving, he says.

“I’ve said it many times on this show,” said Owen. “He was an average finisher at the start of his career, at Chelsea and at Basel. He missed so many chances.

“But the more and more he gets, the better and better of a finisher he becomes.”

Owen makes Mo Salah observation

Owen’s right, as strange as it is to say about a player on the verge of becoming Liverpool’s all-time Premier League scorer. Salah is not a natural finisher in the style of Robbie Fowler or even Owen himself.

Instead, Salah’s strength has come from his ability to find chances. While he doesn’t score them all, teams simply cannot stop the Egyptian from finding opportunities to score. He’s too quick, too strong, and too intelligent with his movement.

One massive positive of that is that, as Owen says, Salah gets more chances to learn from. He has improved, needing to adapt to tighter marking and focus from defenders. The space he found in his first season was never happening again after a record-breaking season.

Owen suggests that Salah is still getting better with more chances coming his way. We’d go along with that, too – which is a scary thought for the rest of the Premier League and Champions League.

Have we even seen the best version of Salah yet? Are we seeing him better than every right now? The idea that there’s more to come is unbelievable.
