Thiago dominated Tottenham Hotspur in midfield as Liverpool won 2-1 away from home. The Spaniard put in the ideal display.

Liverpool going away from home against Tottenham Hotspur was never going to be easy, even with Spurs missing players. The fact the Reds hadn’t won away from home in the Premier League all season showed that.

What they needed was control, then, and Thiago stepped up to hand them that. The midfielder was dominant here, both with and without the ball. Overall, Spurs weren’t sure how to handle him.

As expected, Thiago barely gave the ball away. He finished with 91% passing despite not necessarily prioritising possession – the Reds frequently looked long here as Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah ran in behind.

The fact that Thiago completed 61 passes, then – five more than any other midfield on either side – is remarkable. But at the end of the day, that’s what you expect from the player. He’s one of the world’s best passers.

Defensively, though, Thiago put up one number that you don’t usually see. The 31-year-old won six tackles here, without giving a foul away. It was a fantastic display, with no other midfield matching his 86% success rate, either.

Thiago dominated Tottenham

Thiago is undoubtedly one of the most talented midfielders on the planet. We haven’t seen that too often this season, admittedly, as Liverpool have been a mess. That makes it incredibly difficult for someone like the Spaniard to control games.

But Thiago did just that away at Tottenham. He passed the ball brilliantly, consistently won it back, and allowed Liverpool a base from which to play. It was the ideal midfield performance and a massive reason why the Reds were finally able to win away from home.

Liverpool’s midfield may need recruitment but there’s little doubt that Thiago remains one of the best in the world.
