Liverpool are now very close to finally bringing in a new club doctor, having been without one for the whole of this season.

That’s according to The Athletic, who report that Jurgen Klopp is nearly ready to make what would be a key appointment for Liverpool.

The Reds have been missing a crucial piece of the backroom team since Jim Moxon stood down during pre-season. It’s claimed that having brought in the help of a recruitment agency; the appointment will be an external one.

‘Senior sources’ have reportedly dismissed the idea that the vacant position has harmed Liverpool’s start to the season. But with so many injuries being picked up, it surely hasn’t helped things.

Sporting director Julian Ward is said to have overseen the interview process, with a decision now almost reached.

Still time to salvage Liverpool injury record

Quite why it has taken Liverpool such a long time to make such a key appointment is truly a mystery.

The Reds’ squad must have one of the poorest fitness records in the Premier League. For them to be without someone in such a big role in that area is unacceptable, really.

Hopefully, the appointment will signal the end of Liverpool’s dire injury record this season. The failure to keep players fit has already contributed to the Reds inability to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

But if things can be steadied for the remainder of the campaign, the season can still be salvaged to some degree.

At the moment, there’s no inkling of who the successful candidate might be. The world of doctors in football is a relatively small one though, so it’s likely that whoever it is has a history in the game.

As of now, the in-tray for the new appointment isn’t too lengthy. Most of Liverpool’s injured cohort have returned to training by now.

But with Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota still out, there are still big players missing. Let’s hope this one is boxed off over the coming days.
