‘When I seen that’: Newcastle player was ‘a little bit shocked’ at one decision Liverpool made this season

Newcastle’s Callum Wilson was shocked to see Liverpool make one decision this summer. The striker wouldn’t have made the same choice.

Callum Wilson discussed Liverpool on the latest edition of the Footballer’s Football Podcast. The Newcastle United striker made it clear that the Reds’ decision to sell Sadio Mané in the summer was shocking.

“When I seen that Liverpool were selling Mané in the summer, I was actually a little bit shocked,” said Wilson. “Out of the front-three, he wouldn’t have been my choice of who I would have sold at that moment in time.

“Because when you play against Liverpool, he’s the one where if he’s on it, he can destroy you single-handedly. So that was probably the missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle at the minute.”

Wilson isn’t the first to make this point but it should be clear by now that Mané asked to leave Liverpool. The Reds agreed they’d sell him, given he only had one more year on his contract.

So while it was a ‘shock’, it really wasn’t much of a decision. Mané asked and Liverpool granted the wish to a player who’s been such a rock for them.

We agree with Wilson that they’ve missed him, though. Mané would have popped up with a couple of vital goals that rescued games this season. That’s not to say he’d fix the fact teams can walk through Liverpool’s midfield but he’s a world-class player who would have made a difference.

Liverpool need to learn to be world-beaters without him, though, and that was always the case. Even if he’d remained at Anfield, Mané wasn’t going to be a superstar there forever. The big hope is that Darwin Nunez clicks into place and thrives as the Senegal star did.

And honestly, everything we’ve seen so far make us very optimistic on that front.
