Borussia Monchengladbach have placed a club-record £39m asking price on 21-year-old midfielder Manu Kone, who Liverpool are interested in signing.

That’s according to Sport Bild, via Get German Football News, who report the Bundesliga outfit could choose to cash in on their young talent, as the club have suffered a financial loss between £8.72m and £13.1m during the 2022 calendar year.

Sky Sports have previously credited the Reds with an interest in the Frenchman, and they could now decide to match Gladbach’s £39m asking price for the player.

Newcastle United have also been touted with interest in signing Kone, but Jurgen Klopp’s side would likely be considered the favourites if they pushed hard for his signature in January.

Liverpool want to sign Manu Kone

Impressively for a 21-year-old, Kone has played a crucial role in the German giants’ XI thus far this season. In the Bundesliga, the midfielder has been included in every single one of Daniel Farke’s starting sides when he’s been available this term.

Defensively, he has averaged 1.9 tackles and 0.6 interceptions per game during the campaign; whereas offensively, he has led Gladbach with 1.8 dribbles per league fixture, also winning two fouls during each 90 minutes (via WhoScored).

With the right-sided midfield position still up for grabs in Liverpool’s team, Kone would be a brilliant long-term addition to the squad at Anfield.

Thiago currently leads the Reds in the middle of the park with his creative playmaking ability absolutely crucial to Klopp’s XI. However, at 31-years-old, the Spaniard cannot be relied upon forever. Instead, the Merseysiders need to start thinking about his potential successor.

Kone would certainly be an exciting candidate, given he is already playing week-in and week-out for one of Germany’s biggest clubs.

His all-round skillset would certainly suit English football, and his young age means he could enjoy over a decade of top-flight football in the Premier League.

Jude Bellingham is still set to be Liverpool’s main transfer target next summer, but the club should do all they can to secure the Frenchman’s signature in January.
