Liverpool defender Joe Gomez should prepare himself for another spell on the bench after the return of Ibrahima Konate.
Gomez has been Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice partner for Virgil Van Dijk over recent weeks. But as Konate makes his comeback, the 25-year-old should find himself out of the side.
Konate was brilliant for Liverpool last night as they beat in-form Napoli 2-0. His proactive defending, pace and strength led to the Reds looking far more solid at Anfield.
With Joel Matip still side-lined, it’s now a straight shootout between Gomez and Konate. And judging from yesterday’s display, this shouldn’t be a hard one for Klopp to call.
Of course, Konate should be managed, the last thing we need is the Frenchman breaking down again. But right now, he has the shirt, no question.
Gomez paying for poor form
A lot has been made of Liverpool’s midfield being the main source of woe for them this season. But actually, it could also be argued that their defensive injuries have contributed almost as much.
At the back end of last season, Konate was arguably Liverpool’s best defender. His performance in the Champions League final was colossal and he was expected to step up even further this season.
But after injury struck in the final pre-season friendly, the 23-year-old is still yet to start a Premier League game.
Perhaps you’re thinking is all sounds a little harsh on Gomez. He’s a very good player after all and has been called ‘phenomenal’ by Jurgen Klopp via liverpoolfc.com in the past.
But right now, we’re not seeing that.
It’s okay to be a little off form, most of the Liverpool squad have been at one stage or another this season. But to make a pair of possibly game-losing mistakes two matches in a row, you deserve to be dropped.
Gomez can’t argue that he hasn’t had chances, either. Before last night, the England man had played six 90-minute games in a row for Liverpool.
For a little while, it looked as though Gomez had made the role his own. But with those recent errors, and Konate’s assured display, he surely won’t be on the team-sheet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday. And maybe for the foreseeable future beyond that.
