Liverpool are heavily scouting Dutch centre-back Perr Schuurs for next summer’s transfer market.
That’s according to Tuttomercatoweb, who claim that the Reds are ‘closely following’ the defender’s excellent displays for Torino.
Schuurs has reportedly been a standout performer for the Turin club since joining from Ajax earlier this year. This is said to have captured the attention of Liverpool, who are claimed to be on the lookout for a Virgil Van Dijk successor.
Liverpool will reportedly look to strengthen their defensive options next year, with Schuurs name now on the list.
They’re not the only ones interested, though. It’s claimed that Atletico Madrid will ‘revolutionise’ their defence next summer, and Schuurs is catching their eye too.
Liverpool ready to move for long-term target?
Schuurs should be a name relatively familiar to Liverpool fans. The 22-year-old was fantastic against them in the Champions League for Ajax in 2020.
This led to claims that the Reds would look to snap the youngster up at the next available opportunity.
Amid a defensive crisis, this made some kind of sense. Schuurs looked like a potentially top centre-back.
In the end, it never happened. The Dutchman lost his place in the Ajax side and was eventually sold to Torino in the summer.
According to his agent though, Liverpool did actually try to sign Schuurs for themselves. Speaking to Tuttosport in September, George Gardi claimed that his client had the chance to move to Anfield.
“Over time, clubs of the calibre of Tottenham, Liverpool or PSG had moved to take the player [Schuurs],” he said.
“The operation [to join Torino], as I told you, was long, but fair and in some passages even pleasant. In addition to Liverpool, Tottenham, PSG and three Italian clubs also wanted Schuurs.”
Now, Liverpool could finally ramp up efforts to get their man. Van Dijk isn’t getting any younger and his role could be gently reduced over the coming two or three years. It would be wise to bring in a successor early as they gradually take over from the Dutch legend. Maybe Schuurs could be that player.
