‘Honestly, I didn’t know’: Mo Salah learns in interview who really scored Liverpool’s first goal tonight

Liverpool’s first goal against Napoli tonight wasn’t a particularly clear one. Mohamed Salah only found out who scored it after the game.

Liverpool saw off Napoli on Tuesday evening thanks to two late goals. The Reds played well against arguably Europe’s in-form side. Napoli hadn’t lost in 22 games and won their last 11 – Liverpool were up against it.

Fortunately, they found a breakthrough. It wasn’t entirely clear who scored that goal, however, and Mohamed Salah needed to ask after the game.

Darwin Nunez powered a header at goal and the goalkeeper may-or-may-not have kept it out. Salah then definitely pushed it over the line for 1-0. But in a post-match interview, Salah asked the BT Sport interviewer who got the goal.

“Was it mine? Okay, thank you!” said Salah. “Honestly, I didn’t know because the ball is in, then the whistle – they didn’t say for which player exactly.

“Thanks for confirming that!”

It wasn’t clear and, in fact, Jamie Carragher disagrees that it was Salah’s goal. He took to Twitter to say it was ‘Nunez’s goal’. Really, he might be right.

It did look a little like Nunez’s header went over the line but it was very tight. We imagine he won’t kick up much of a fuss as the Uruguayan got Liverpool’s second.

That one was unclear, too, though. He tapped in Virgil van Dijk’s header right on the line and was flagged offside. Fortunately, it turned out that Nunez was marginally onside and he got his goal.

And so Liverpool beat Napoli 2-0 with two goals from a combined four yards. If that. Goal poaching got the Reds over the line and there certainly aren’t any complaints here.

A big win right when Liverpool needed it. Hopefully, they can take confidence from this and carry it to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.
