During Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football last week, Jamie Carragher was full of praise for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

Now fresh reports have linked the player with a Liverpool move.

According to TNT in Brazil, the Reds, alongside Chelsea and Real Madrid, see a way of signing the Brazil international in the future.

With the Magpies reportedly looking to extend the 24-year-old’s contract, TNT suggests that if the Tyneside star rejects the opportunity to sign a new deal with the Toon, the north-east club could be forced into cashing-in on the player. Consequently, the likes of Liverpool would use this opportunity to make their move and swoop for his signature.

Amid rumours of the Reds’ interest, the Anfield legend has shared his glowing verdict on the Magpies star.

Carragher claimed on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football: “The numbers are fantastic. But, I feel like the effect that he is having on the crowd, you go back to Kevin Keegan when he first signed, David Ginola or when Alan Shearer came in.

“In that effect he is uniting a club and a fanbase really.

“What we find out with midfield players is we put them in positions in terms of numbers and call them a six, an eight, or a ten.

“He feels like the type of player who could play all of those roles. In terms of playing this season, he has played as more of the deeper midfield players.

“When comparing him to midfield players from the teams in the top six, is that he is a throwback to when Roy (Keane) was playing, in that he is a midfield player, he is not a sitting or attacking midfielder.”

Strong signing?

Guimaraes’ ability to play across multiple positions, as Carragher highlighted, is something that could certainly benefit Liverpool right now.

The Reds’ midfield has been questioned heavily this term, and Guimaraes’ energy and ability to press defensively would provide them with key skills which have been desperately lacking.

The Brazilian’s ability to spot a pass could also be handy. Jordan Henderson provided a great assist in the Champions League in midweek, but usually outside of Thiago, there looks to be a lack of natural creators in Liverpool’s midfield ranks.

Therefore, Guimaraes – a Premier League proven talent – would easily slot in Klopp’s midfield, which was already crying out for more technical quality and depth. Having already adapted to the physicality of English football, it would not be the case of easing the 24-year-old into the team, like with Fabinho when he arrived at Anfield.

Having earned statistical comparisons to Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante and Barcelona’s Pedri, the Brazilian’s all-encompassing abilities would certainly ensure a fantastic signing for the Reds, as his versatility would permit a more regular rotation of key players.
