Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff have been extremely impressed with Harvey Elliott recently as the 19-year-old has been utilised in a number of different positions in Liverpool’s starting XI, according to a report by The Athletic.
The 19-year-old played a crucial part in the Reds’ 3-0 domination of Ajax last night after he sealed the victory with the side’s third and final goal.
The U21 England international assumed his position on the right-hand side of the midfield as Klopp’s XI prepared for kick-off, with captain Jordan Henderson mirroring his position on the left.
Whilst Elliott is no stranger to playing on the right-side of the midfield, he has also been utilised in a number of different positions this season.
Thus far in the 2022/23 campaign, the Reds have played Elliott as a right-winger, as a right-midfielder, as an attacking midfielder and as a central midfielder.
Klopp’s coaching staff impressed by Elliott’s versatility
According to a report by The Athletic, Klopp and his coaching staff have been extremely impressed by the way Elliott has adapted tactically when having been asked to play in a number of different roles thus far this season.
Consequently, the 19-year-old is becoming known for his versatility to play as a midfielder or more deeply as an attacker.
Scoring just once in his first 24 senior appearances in a Reds shirt, the youngster has more recently bagged three goals in 13 appearances – including back-to-back finishes against Rangers and Ajax in the Champions League.
With Liverpool’s continued interest in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham, it awaits to be seen as to whether the coaching staff see Elliott’s long-term future on the right-side of the midfield.
However, with such a versatile skillset, the former Fulham youngster will prove to be an incredibly useful asset for Klopp to have at his disposal – especially in the absence of the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.
