Darwin Nunez says Luis Suárez has given him advice about life at Liverpool and the Premier League. The compatriots share some traits.
Darwin Nunez talked details about a conversation with Luis Suárez to ESPN this week. Suárez, arguably the greatest Uruguayan player of all time, sees his compatriot following in his footsteps.
After all, Nunez joined Liverpool this summer – a little over 10 years after Suárez did the same. And as we saw on the new-boy’s first Anfield start, he does share a similar temperament problem.
Nunez was shown red for a headbutt against Crystal Palace. It was a hot-headed moment that did draw comparisons with Suárez. And who better to turn to for advice on controlling your emotions than someone banned three times for biting an opponent?
“It was a good thing because not many bother to pick up the phone and send you a message; I think his gesture was very important to me,” Nunez told ESPN. “Luis is a benchmark, an idol around the world.
“I’m just starting out, I’m young, and he knows all these things because he’s even played in the Premier League with Liverpool.
“Luis told me that these things in the Premier are going to happen in all the games, that they are going to come looking for me, that they are going to hit me, and that I must become strong and I must not react to the s— they give me.
“‘Listen to an a—— like me,’ he told me. I am very grateful for that message and the love he has for me”.
Luis Suárez advice for Darwin Nunez
Well, he do hope that Nunez spends a little less time suspended than Suárez did. It is nice having an unpredictable, chaotic Uruguayan striker again, though. Nunez is certainly that.

Thankfully, he’s also capable of the magic that Suárez provided – not just the emotion. He’s now scored on his fourth-straight start, taking his tally to six for the campaign. It’s particularly impressive when you consider he’s still a little raw and consistently missing big chances.
Once Nunez starts putting those away, maybe he can rack up some of the numbers we saw from Suárez, too.
